ADRIENNE DOIG: IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!
12 December 2020 – 14 February 2021
Through the lens of self-portraiture, Blue Mountains-based artist Adrienne Doig (b1963), tackles the everyday with good humour and wit. Her survey ADRIENNE DOIG: IT'S ALL ABOUT ME! draws upon the past three decades of the artist’s practice, which fuses historical references and humour to respond to the everyday and reflect on now.
Using a variety of media, including embroidery, applique, sculpture and video, Doig playfully explores intimate aspects of her life, from having a cup of tea to performing mundane housework. Embedded within her practice are layered responses to universal themes that have social, environmental and political narratives. By manipulating, reworking and combining imagery from multiple sources, Doig records her own experiences within a larger context. Hence, IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!
The exhibition ADRIENNE DOIG: IT'S ALL ABOUT ME! will feature early performance video artworks and her My Life As A Doll series as well as the more recent Everyday Me, a paper doll installation. Also included will be elements of recent projects commissioned by the Art Gallery of NSW, for the Together in Art series and Archie Plus. Pushing the boundaries of the genre of self-portraiture, her explorations across a range of textile mediums also highlight the evolution of her ideas through the utilisation of different media.
Doig graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney (1989), and has a Certificate Art and Drama from Ryflkle Folkehogskule, Norway (1983). She has undertaken residencies at the American Academy, Rome (2014), the Moya Dyring studio, Paris (2007), the Visual Arts Craft Board of the Australia Council studio residency in Milan (2003) and the Austrian Federal Chancellory studio residency in Vienna (2001).
Doig has exhibited in contemporary art spaces and artist-run and commercial galleries in Australia and abroad. She has had solo exhibitions at the Research Library and Archive at the Art Gallery of NSW (2018) and Penrith Regional Gallery (2010). Her work has featured in group exhibitions at the Mornington Peninsular Regional Gallery, Orange Regional Gallery, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, University of Queensland Art Museum and Art Gallery of NSW. She is represented by Martin Browne Contemporary in Sydney.
