Home 2020: Gunhigal Nguambang Wiradyuri Mayiny (Plains Country Wiradyuri People)
2020 was the second year the HOME Program has run at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. The year was met with challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, though through adaptive programming and brainstorming it was decided that the 2020 students works would be displayed in a digital format as an online exhibition. For 2020, 170 students from eight schools in the Bathurst region were involved: Meadow Flat, Cudgegong, Bathurst South, Manildra, Wattle Flat, Sofala, Mulyan and Bathurst.
The students collaborative artwork is a digital quilt, a montage of collages created by the students from a recorded video workshop led by Wiradyuri artist Aleshia Lonsdale. This work is inspired by the collage artworks of Karla Dickens.
The students self-selected artworks are shown as a digital photograph of the selected art object presented in a place that represents home such as a yard, a bush track, a fence, or a room. This moves the art gallery out from the site of BRAG and into the multiple sites of home that are represented in the student’s photographs.
The artists looked at by the students for 2020 were Karla Dickens, Roy Kennedy and Michael Riley. This years exhibition of the Home Program Home 2020: Gunhigal Nguambang Wiradyuri Mayiny (Plains Country Wiradyuri People) is presented as an online exhibition and is viewable on the BRAG website below.
