PETER SPILSBURY: Re.construction
Peter Spilsbury: Re.construction
Saturday 10 April – Sunday 30 May 2021
Blue Mountains-based multi-discipline artist Peter Spilsbury works with sculpture, drawing, installation and video. On graduating from St Martins School of Art in London, he worked at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and was involved in various projects in visual arts, music and performance. After moving to Australia in 1974, Spilsbury continued his art practice while working as studio supervisor in Sculpture, Performance and Installation at Sydney College of the Arts, from where he also received a Master of Visual Arts. He has been a visiting lecturer at tertiary institutions, and his work is in collections in Australia and Europe.
The works featured in Re.construction are made entirely of recycled materials, mostly found in and around his large garden. With minimal intervention and minimal manipulation, Spilsbury seeks to energise these materials and objects, always slightly confusing and slightly ambiguous. For Spilsbury, the object is neither one thing nor the other, but something in between. References ranging from Architecture to Constructivism to Arte Povera reveal themselves later, in their own time.
