LINDA CHANT: hold me, cover me

12 December 2020 – 14 February 2021

Cowra-based multidisciplinary artist Linda Chant’s work explores the conceptual and material nature of objects. Originally trained in painting and printmaking, Chant recently ventured into sculpture.

Her small, delicate sculptures – glasses, bottles, vases and lamps manipulated, shrouded and bound with fabric – offer moments of curiosity and wonder. Literally and figuratively, they hold a moment, a memory, a thought, an action. They also allude to notions of fragility and protection. Chant explains, “Sewing to surround glass, over and around metal, is a risky procedure which draws parallels to the notion of fragility and protection.”

Chant attended Riverina College of Advanced Education, graduating with a Diploma of Applied Art in 1981 and with a Diploma of Art Education the following year. She has taught Visual Arts in the UK and in metropolitan and regional NSW. Her work has featured in group exhibitions at Orange Regional Art Gallery, Cowra Regional Art Gallery and Wollongong Art Gallery. In 2019, Chant was awarded the drawing prize for the Lachlan Valley Art Awards and she has been a finalist on five occasions for Calleen Art Award.
